چکیده

We investigate in this paper the dependence relation between the space-time periodic coefficients A, q and μ of the reaction-diffusion equation ∂tu−∇ · (A(t, x)∇u) + q(t, x) · ∇u = μ(t, x)u(1− u), and the spreading speed of the solutions of the Cauchy problem associated with this equation and compactly supported initial data. We prove in particular that (1) taking the spatial or temporal average of μ decreases the minimal speed, (2) if the coefficients do not depend on t and q ≡ 0, then increasiong the amplitude of the diffusion matrix A increases the minimal speed, (3) if A = IN , μ is a constant, then the introduction of a space periodic drift term q = ∇Q increases the minimal speed. To prove these results, we use a variational characterization of the spreading speed that involves a family of periodic principal eigenvalues associated with the linearization of the equation near 0. We are thus back to the investigation of the dependence relation between this family of eigenvalues and the coefficients.

Transition waves for Fisher-KPP equations with general time-heterogeneous and space-periodic coefficients

This paper is devoted to existence and non-existence results for generalized transition waves solutions of space-time heterogeneous Fisher-KPP equations. When the coefficients of the equation are periodic in space but otherwise depend in a fairly general fashion on time, we prove that such waves exist as soon as their speed is sufficiently large in a sense. When this speed is too small, transit...

The Stefan Problem for the Fisher-kpp Equation

We study the Fisher-KPP equation with a free boundary governed by a one-phase Stefan condition. Such a problem arises in the modeling of the propagation of a new or invasive species, with the free boundary representing the propagation front. In one space dimension and the radially symmetric case in higher space dimensions this problem was studied by some authors. In both cases a spreading-vanis...

On the nonlocal Fisher-KPP equation: steady states, spreading speed and global bounds

We consider the Fisher-KPP equation with a non-local interaction term. We establish a condition on the interaction that allows for existence of non-constant periodic solutions, and prove uniform upper bounds for the solutions of the Cauchy problem, as well as upper and lower bounds on the spreading rate of the solutions with compactly supported initial data.

The Freidlin-Gärtner formula for general reaction terms

We devise a new geometric approach to study the propagation of disturbance compactly supported data in reaction-diffusion equations. The method builds a bridge between the propagation of disturbance and of almost planar solutions. It applies to very general reaction-diffusion equations. The main consequences we derive in this paper are: a new proof of the classical Freidlin-Gärtner formula for ...

Propagation Phenomena in Reaction-advection-diffusion Equations a Dissertation Submitted to the Department of Mathematics and the Committee on Graduate Studies of Stanford University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Reaction-advection-diffusion (RAD) equations are a class of non-linear parabolic equations which are used to model a diverse range of biological, physical, and chemical phenomena. Originally introduced in the early twentieth century as a model for population dynamics, they have been used in recent years in diverse contexts including climate change [8], criminal behavior [11], and combustion [72...
